My Very First Short Story

I was eight when I wrote it. It was on a single sheet of notebook paper in pencil. I remember a man swam in a lake, learned the lake was infested with scorpions and then the man died. For me, it was a masterpiece. My parents, of course, told me they liked it.

Unpublishable? Of course. But this incident taught me something. Even back at eight I liked to write stories. Nothing was more pleasureable in life than creating worlds, towns, characters, plots and making them work in certain ways. I knew from that moment that becoming a writer was what I wanted to do.

Even now, as a parent I am slow to discourage my kids from things they like to do. You never know when something to do as young children ends up being what they want to do for the rest of their lives.
